Hooks for Bots
Prompts that make AI write opening lines worth reading
Grok, ChatGPT, Claude and agent bots can write a hundred opening lines in a minute. Most of them are bland. This page gives you the prompts, rules and checks to get hooks that actually stop the scroll. Every prompt has a Copy prompt button and buttons to send it straight to your bot.
Note: ChatGPT Dots needs ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium.
Why bots write weak hooks
By default, a language model aims for the safest, most average answer. That is the opposite of a hook.
- Generic
- It writes for everyone, so it speaks to no one. "In today's fast-paced world..."
- Hedged
- "Might", "can help", "it's important to note". Hooks need a clear claim.
- Too long
- It warms up before it gets to the point. The point should be the first line.
- Clichés
- "Game-changer", "unlock", "Here's the thing", rocket emojis. Readers have learned to skip these.
- Made-up proof
- Without real numbers, it invents them. That breaks trust fast.
The fix is not a smarter bot. It's a tighter brief: one idea, real proof, a hook type, hard limits and a list of banned phrases.
The master prompt
Paste this, fill in the brackets, and send. It works in any chat bot.
You are a sharp X copywriter. Write the first line (the hook) for my post. My post: [paste the post or the main idea] Audience: [who it's for] The one point: [one sentence] Real proof: [numbers, results, names, or "none"] My voice: [e.g. plain, direct, a bit dry] Rules: - Max 12 words. It must make sense on its own before "Show more". - One clear claim. No hedging words (might, can, often, arguably). - Be specific: numbers, names, stakes. Never invent numbers or facts. - No clichés: game-changer, unlock, dive in, here's the thing, in today's world, you won't believe. - No hashtags, no emojis, no questions unless I ask. - The post must fully deliver on the hook. Give me 10 options using different hook types (curiosity, contrarian, number, story, mistake, proof, how-to, comparison, relatable, open-loop). Label each with its type. Then pick the best one and explain why in one sentence.
Give the bot context
The output is only as good as what you give it. Check these before you hit send:
- Audience: one specific group, not "everyone".
- One idea: the single point of the post, in one sentence.
- Proof: real numbers, results, dates or examples. Or say "none" so it doesn't invent any.
- Voice: three words for how you sound, plus one or two of your past posts.
- Hook type: pick one from the 20 hooks, or ask for a mix.
- Limits: word count, no emojis, no hashtags.
- Banned list: the phrases you never want to see.

Generate 10, pick 1
The first line a bot writes is rarely its best. Ask for many, then make it judge its own work against a rubric.
Write 10 hooks for this post, each using a different hook type. Label the type. Then score each one 1–5 on: stops the scroll, specific, clear in under 2 seconds, true to the post, sounds like me. Show a table with the scores and totals. Rewrite the top 2 to make them shorter and sharper. Recommend one. Post: [MY POST] Audience: [WHO] Proof: [REAL NUMBERS OR "none"]
Then read the top three out loud. Pick the one you would stop for. Trust your ear over the bot's score.
The scoring rubric
Score every hook 1–5 on each line. Anything under 20 out of 30 goes back for a rewrite.
| Criterion | 5 means |
|---|---|
| Stops the scroll | You'd stop for it yourself |
| Specific | Has a number, name or concrete detail |
| Clear | Understood in under 2 seconds |
| Short | Fits before "Show more", ideally under 12 words |
| True | The post delivers fully; no invented facts |
| Voice | Sounds like you, not like a bot |
Score this hook 1–5 on: stops the scroll, specific, clear, short, true to the post, sounds like me. Total out of 30. If under 20, rewrite it and score again. Hook: [HOOK] Post: [MY POST]

System prompt for posting bots
For agents that draft or schedule X posts for you, such as a Grok Bot, a custom GPT or a Claude project. Paste this into its standing instructions.
ROLE You write X posts for me. The first line is the most important line; treat it as the headline. HOOK RULES 1. Every post starts with a hook of max 12 words that makes sense on its own before "Show more". 2. Use one of these hook types and rotate them: curiosity, contrarian, negative, number, story, mistake, warning, secret, proof, list, how-to, comparison, challenge, prediction, relatable, direct callout, FOMO, myth-busting, transformation, open-loop. Never use the same type twice in a row. 3. One clear claim. No hedging (might, can, often, arguably, it's important to note). 4. Be specific: numbers, names, stakes. Only use facts and numbers I gave you or that you can cite. Never invent results, quotes or experiments. 5. Banned: game-changer, unlock, supercharge, dive in, here's the thing, in today's world, you won't believe, buckle up, 🚀, 🧵, hashtags in the hook. 6. The body must fully pay off the hook. If it can't, change the hook. PROCESS - For each post, draft 10 hooks, score them 1–5 on scroll-stop, specificity, clarity, length, truth and voice, and keep the top one. - Show me the winner plus the 2 runners-up with their type and score. VOICE [3 words for my voice] — example posts: [paste 2–3 of my posts] SAFETY - Never post without my approval unless I explicitly say so for that post. - No rage bait, no fake scarcity, no misleading claims. - If information is missing, ask one short question instead of guessing.
Short rules for custom instructions
A compact version for ChatGPT custom instructions, Grok customize, Claude project instructions or a Perplexity space.
When I ask for an X post or hook: start with a hook of max 12 words that works before "Show more". One clear claim, specific, no hedging, no clichés, no emojis or hashtags in the hook. Never invent numbers or facts. Give 10 options of different hook types, score them, and recommend one.
Workflow per platform
- Grok
- Good at what's happening on X right now. Add: "Look at what is trending in [niche] on X today and tie the hook to it, without copying any post." Save the short rules under Customize so every chat uses them.
- ChatGPT
- Put the short rules in Custom instructions, or build a custom GPT with the full system prompt. Ask for a table with scores so you can compare quickly.
- Claude
- Create a Project, paste the system prompt into the project instructions and upload 10 of your best posts as a voice reference. Claude follows banned-word lists well.
- Perplexity, Gemini, Meta AI, Muse
- Use the master prompt per chat. Ask for sources if you want it to add facts, and check every one.
- Agent bots (Grok Bot and similar)
- Paste the full system prompt into its standing instructions. Have it draft on a schedule and send you the winner plus runners-up for approval. Keep posting on manual approval until the hooks are consistently good.
Mistakes
- Asking for "a catchy hook" with no post, audience or proof.
- Taking the first output instead of 10 options.
- Letting the bot invent numbers, experiments or quotes.
- No banned list, so the clichés come back.
- Hooks the post doesn't deliver on.
- Using the same hook type every day.
- Letting a posting bot publish without review.
- Not giving examples of your own voice.
FAQ
- Which bot writes the best hooks?
- The one with the best brief. With the prompts on this page, the differences between Grok, ChatGPT and Claude get small.
- Do the Send to buttons work everywhere?
- Grok, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity open with the prompt filled in (you may need to be signed in). Grok Bot, ChatGPT Dots, Gemini, Meta AI and Muse don't support that, so the prompt is copied first: just paste it. The prompt is always copied as a backup.
- Will readers know a bot wrote it?
- Not if you give it your voice, ban the clichés and edit the final line yourself.
- Should a bot post automatically?
- Only once its hooks are reliably good and true. Start with approval on every post.
- Can I use these prompts for LinkedIn or Threads?
- Yes. Change "X" and the "Show more" limit to fit the platform.
A bot writes fast. You decide what's worth reading.
